About us

The Energy Systems Society (ESS) at Northeastern University is a graduate student organization dedicated to enhancing the experience and knowledge of students in the field of energy systems. Affiliated with the College of Engineering, ESS welcomes all members of the Northeastern community interested in energy, sustainability, and environmental issues.

Our mission is to foster excellence and success within the institution by uniting students, industry leaders, and alumni. We organize various events, including seminars, industrial tours, educational forums, and the annual Energy Conference, to promote networking and interdisciplinary learning in engineering, business, and policy.

It’s been a pleasure to connect with the Northeastern University students during The Journey to Net Zero Energy Conference. In a world facing more challenges than at probably any other point in recent history, I was inspired by the next generation of business leaders, engineers, scientists, and marketeers and how they can help change the world with their innovative ideas, unique experience and global mindset. At Schneider Electric, we believe access to Energy and Digital are basic human rights and it was uplifting to have this dialogue with young energy enthusiasts, preoccupied with the same big questions around sustainability and efficiency, energy and resources, and how we can bridge progress and sustainability for all. Our special partnership with Northeastern University stared in 2016, and we’ve been creating experiences and employment opportunities together for students ever since; only in the last year and a half, we have managed to participate in over 20+ events with Northeastern students. I’ve been working full-time in the power and energy industry for over 47 years. The Northeastern University Energy Conference has always had a stellar reputation. Conflicts forced me to turn down previous requests to participate, and I was excited to give the afternoon keynote at this year’s 7th Annual Energy Conference. The conference is organized and led by an exceptional group of students, and has a relevant set of topics with excellent speakers. I thoroughly enjoyed participating this year and am grateful for the opportunity!

Students who are part of ESS gain valuable experience in managing deadlines, enhancing their professional communication skills, and networking with engineers who are currently working in industry. It is a unique opportunity for students to contribute to the Energy field and acquire skills that will help them throughout their careers. Students in ESS are very fun to be around and I highly recommend other students join ESS. The ESS holds the largest student-run on campus event at Northeastern University. Every year the ESS students create, develop, and fund an Energy conference which averages about 300 industry professionals and students, has over 80 speaker panellists from around the country, and over the years turned this campus event into a National event. This is the perfect venue for students to be connected with employers on multiple levels. It is because of this event and the other activities that the ESS does which brings co-op opportunities to students here at NU.

NU ESS is a rich collaborative platform. With ties across the energy industry, it aims to create a network of students, professionals, thought leaders, and academicians - bridging the gap between them and instigating innovation. During my time with the ESS, I have been able to learn and grow with the community. As President for the 2019 term, my team and I were able to deliver one of the biggest student-led Energy conferences. It was a rewarding experience to have been able to spark active energy dialogue among a strong community of energy enthusiasts. It is a great hub for networking, meeting like-minded professionals, and learning the ways of clean energy. I am grateful to the MIE department and my multiple faculty mentors that are of incredible support to every student here. I look forward to amazing events hosted by the group and applaud their undeterred efforts in delivering energy content despite circumstantial barriers. Cheers to the NU Energy Systems Society!

When I reflect on my one and a half years of being the VP of External Relations in the Northeastern University Energy Systems Society, I conclude that the experience not only gave me the exposure to endless possibilities in the energy industry, but also prepared me in unpredictable ways to start my professional career. Through collaboration on numerous energy events and conferences with industry leaders and energy enthusiasts, I found myself being able to communicate, think, and share ideas in ways that challenged me to discover a voice that I didn’t know I had. This voice has played a vital role in my co-op, my academics and my day-to-day communication and engagements. I had the best educational experience with my incredibly supportive friends/co-members and professors who are nothing short of champions. As I look forward to an amazing bright future, I draw every day on the dispositions I developed during my time with the NU-Energy Systems Society.
